What exactly is the Nakasendo Trail?
The Nakasendo Trail is a historic route that once connected Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo), passing through preserved post towns, cedar forests, and mountain villages. Think slow Japan, not neon Japan.
Is this trip suitable for families with children?
Yes, it is perfect for families from age 7 and above. The private itinerary is tailored to your family’s pace for a relaxed, enjoyable experience.
Is this suitable for older travellers?
Yes. We regularly design this walk for travellers in their 50s-70s, and beyond by adjusting distances, accommodation locations, and support levels.
How challenging is the walk?
Moderate. You’ll walk on a mix of village roads, forest paths, and gentle inclines. Distances typically range from 8–20 km per day, but we tailor pacing, terrain, and rest stops to you. You don’t need to be ultra-fit; you do need to enjoy being on your feet.
Do I need hiking experience?
No. If you’re in generally good health and comfortable walking for several hours with breaks, you’ll be fine. Experienced hikers enjoy it for the scenery and culture; first-timers love it because it’s forgiving and well-supported.
What about luggage?
Handled. Your main luggage is transferred between accommodations daily, so you walk with just a light daypack. Luxury rule: you carry memories, not suitcases.
Where will we stay?
A mix of characterful ryokan, boutique inns, and carefully chosen hotels, prioritising comfort, location, and atmosphere.
Is this a guided or self-guided walk?
Primarily guided. We design the journey with expert local support, logistics handled end-to-end, and guides arranged where they add real value. That said, because every itinerary is fully customised, we can also plan a self-guided version with detailed route notes, luggage transfers, and on-trip support.
Can this be customised?
Fully. Route length, daily distance, accommodation style, food focus, private guides, cultural add-ons—it’s all built from scratch.
Is food included?
Most breakfasts and dinners are included, especially at ryokan stays, where meals are part of the experience. Dietary needs are managed in advance.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes.
Who is this journey not for?
If you want luxury without walking, or a rigid schedule with zero flexibility, this isn’t your trip. If you want depth, rhythm, and a sense of earning the experience—you’ll love it.
